The band consists of two members, Jules De Martino (drum and vocals) and Katie White (vocals, guitar and bass drum). Katie White first appeared as a teenage singer in girl group ‘TKO’, short for Total Knock Out. The band consisted of Katie and two friends. Jules De Martino started out in a teenage band called ‘Babakoto’, and released a single called "Just To Get By" in 1987. After ‘Babakoto’ split up De Martino became singer in an indie rock group named ‘Mojo Pin’. The band released two singles, "You" in 1995 and "My Imagination" in 1996. He met White whilst she was still a member of ‘TKO’, just before the group decided to go their separate ways. A few months later the pair bumped into each other and went on to form trio group ‘Dear Eskiimo’ who were signed to Mercury Records, but due to a combination of creative differences and the management style of the record label they had been signed with, the band decided to split. In 2006, they formed ‘The Ting Tings’ and began playing private shows at Islington Mill (Salford), these tickets were very sought after and many record labels were interested in seeing what this up and coming band had to offer. They would continue to play Islington Mill, which would become a regular place for their gigs and almost act as a base for the band. Through 2007 they toured with ‘Reverend and The Makers’ whilst also playing their own smaller shows. They received a lot of attention after their performance at Glastonbury ’07 with Radio 1’s DJ Jo Whiley notably getting behind the band. This year ‘The Ting Tings’ were touring on the NME award shows. They were the opening act of the tour, an honour which has also been held by bands such as ‘Franz Ferdinand’ and ‘Arctic Monkeys’. Their first major single release 'Great DJ' was voted the number one tune of 2008 so far by NME readers and had a great amount of airplay from Radio 1 and XFM, amongst a lot of other radio stations. Moreover, they have recently been on their first tour of the USA since their formation back in 2007. In March they played SXSW and were said by many to be the highlight of the Austin, Texas festival. ‘The Ting Tings’ are scheduled to go on their first tour of the UK during the next few months, and are also planning to go back to the USA before the end of 2008. In addition to this, if all goes as planned, they will be playing most of the summer’s major festivals.
In light of all this, nobody knows what the future holds for the Salford duo, but everything points towards 2008 being the year of ‘The Ting Tings’.
